Three phases of withdrawal - each phase has defined subjects
The withdrawal of the GNVQ qualification was announced by QCA in November 2003.
There are to be three phases of withdrawal. Awarding bodies have defined subjects in each phase that are to be withdrawn.
First-phase subjects
These apply to the last:
- two-year course started in September 2003;
- one-year course started in September 2004; and
- re-sit in January 2006. (for some units)
Please refer to the information manual for availability of portfolio and tested units by subject
in the following subjects.
- Construction;
- Hospitality & Catering;
- Land & Environment;
- Manufacturing;
- Performing Arts; and
- Retail & Distributive Services.
Second-phase subjects:
These apply to the last:
- two-year course started in September 2004;
- one-year course starting in September 2005; and
- re-sit in January 2007. (for some units)

- Science.
Third-phase subjects:
These apply to the last:
- two-year course starting in September 2005;
- one-year course starting in September 2006; and
- re-sit in January 2008. (for some units)
